22.1.12

CastleVille is the Second Most Played Facebook Game Daily in 22 Days

If there's one takeaway from this, it's that 'Ville games still got it. Zynga's CastleVille has surpassed the likes of FarmVille, The Sims Social and Zynga Poker to become the second most played game daily on Facebook with 8.1 million returning every day. The game is now in the top five for monthly players, with 27.6 million, according to AppData. And it did it in just 22 days.

As a result, CastleVille is both faster and slower than CityVille was a year. The latter reached nearly as many monthly players in almost half the time, but didn't amass as many daily players as Zynga Dallas's new hotness did last month. For what it's worth, CastleVille is far stronger out of the gate where it counts: daily players, the best measure of how gripping a Facebook game is.

This explosive growth can be chalked up to a few factors, but one stands out the most: the Zynga fan base. CastleVille released to a pool of over 200 million able-handed social gamers practically twitching at the thought of a new game to play. Of course, Zynga took great advantage of this, employing several cross promotions across its existing stable of successful games. "Reach Level 5 in CastleVille and get a free Cow" ... or something like that.

That easily explains the burst of growth, but what is it about CastleVille that's drawing more players in than nearly all of Zynga's games? While the game is certainly the most robust, full-featured and gorgeous 'Ville game to date, it's still a 'Ville game. Could it simply be that it's new and shinier than the rest, or is the 'Ville formula really still the best way to approach social games?

CastleVille Beastie Lab Quests Everything You Need To Know

A new quest series has launched in your Kingdom in CastleVille, which sees Beasties trying to overrun your land (as usual). Now though, you'll really have a way to fight back by constructing the Beastie Lab through these quests. There are eight quests in all, and we're here with a guide to help you know what to expect and how to finish each one. Let's get started!

The Good Fight
Banish 2 Gloom Rats in your Kingdom
Visit 2 Neighbors
Tend 5 Buildings in your Neighbors' Kingdoms

This one's pretty simple. You can either complete tasks around your own Kingdom with the hope of randomly drawing out a Gloom Rat, or you can head into the market and purchase a Gloom Rat potion for just 5 Reputation points. As for the tending jobs, you'll need to actually collect from buildings - not just accelerate their progress - for them to count towards your five. When you finish this first quest, you'll receive 500 coins, 10 XP and two Gloom Rat Potions.

Weird Science
Buy a Beastie Lab
Construct the Beastie Lab

The Beastie Lab costs just 2,000 coins in the market, and can be constructed using three Wood Planks, 10 Stones and five Beakers. The Beakers come from asking your friends (via individual requests), or they can be earned at random by tending buildings in both your own and your neighbors' kingdoms. When you complete the Lab's construction, you'll finish this quest and will receive 1,000 coins and 20 XP.

Here, Beastie Beastie
Collect 6 Gloom Rat Tails
Craft 1 Rat Decoy
Place 1 Rat Decoy

The Rat Decoy can be crafted inside your newly constructed Beastie Lab. You'll need three Shells (earned by fishing), two Gloom Rat Tails (defeat Gloom Rats) and a block of Moldy Cheese (ask friends) to craft it. It takes 12 hours to complete, and afterwards can be placed in your kingdom as you do with any other item. When you complete this quest, you'll receive 1,000 coins and 20 XP.

Wolf's Bane
Ask friends for 4 Longbows
Craft 5 Silver Arrows
Use 2 Silver Arrows to Banish Gloom Wolves

The Longbows come from a general news post that asks your friends to send them to you. Meanwhile, the Silver Arrows are crafted inside your Beastie Lab, and can be thought of as Wood Clubs or another weapon that allow you to take off more health per energy point used to combat the Beasties in your Kingdom. A single Silver Arrow requires four Gloom Wolf Hair, two Silver Ore and two Arrowheads to craft. Arrowheads come from friends, or by tending flowers. A single Silver Arrow takes four hours to craft.

Morphing Time
Collect 3 Thief's Cloaks
Craft 4 Thief Morphers
Use 2 Thief Morphers on Gloom Thieves

Gloom Thief Potions can be purchased in the market for 10 Reputation Hearts each, and you'll have a chance to receive a Thief's Cloak when banishing them. The Thief Morphers, meanwhile, are crafted inside your Beastie Lab. You can use them from your inventory on extra Gloom Thieves to turn them into chickens. when you finish this quest, you'll receive 1,750 coins, 35 XP and a Alchemy Table decoration.

Clucked Up
Ask friends for 6 Chicken Feed
Tend 15 Chickens in your Neighbors' Kingdoms
Craft 3 Hard Boiled Eggs

Hard Boiled Eggs are crafted in your Kitchen using five Pails of Water and 10 Eggs each. You can get Eggs by tending your own adult Chickens. Finishing this quest gives you 1,000 coins and 20 XP.

Secret Ingredient
Ask friends for 6 Philosopher's Stones
Collect 8 Gloom Goblin Ears
Craft 5 Alchemist Powders

Even though you can earn the Alchemist Powders for free by simply helping out in your friends' Kingdoms, they can also be crafted within the Beastie Lab. The Gloom Goblin Ears, meanwhile, come from banishing Gloom Goblins. You can purchase their potions in the store for 12 Reputation Hearts each. When you complete this quest, you'll receive 1,750 coins and 35 XP.

WMBD
Have 15 Alchemist Powder to Make Beastie Bomb
Visit 10 Neighbors
Use Beastie Bomb

The Beastie Bomb is special item that will immediately banish all Beasties currently active in your kingdom. You'll craft one within your Beastie Lab. When you finish this final Beastie Lab quest, you'll receive 2,500 coins and 50 XP.

CastleVille on Facebook in the next Ville

Games like FarmVille, FrontierVille and CityVille popularized the standard for what most Facebook games look and feel like. That said, Zynga Dallas's debut game, CastleVille, has massive shoes to fill as the fourth major 'Ville game. And after a look at the game, courtesy of Creative Director Bill Jackson, CastleVille's approach is clear: Sweat the small stuff.

When there's no need to reinvent the wheel, you simply make it smoother, give it more traction and maybe even a shiny rim. And along the way, you might happen upon something new entirely. CastleVille takes the tried and true formula of building your own sprawling property to manage and adds touches that competitors either haven't thought of or had the resources to muster. While we'd go with the latter, it's nevertheless impressive. "CastleVille, to us, is one of the most beautiful games that we've been able to create to date," Jackson gushes to us.

It's no joke. The first thing players will notice when they arrive in CastleVille is simply the visual fidelity. From the bright colors to the numerous points of animation in the characters and the environment this game is turned up to 11 when it comes to looks. These characters are far more defined than in any Zynga game to date, but so is the world. Jackson showed us what it looks like when you'll chop down trees in the game, and with each whack a tree wiggled and ultimately bowed before crashing down.

"When we were having some early players try the game, they expressed how much delight they had in building a kingdom and have it come to life like that," Jackson says. "And that really is one of the big aspirations of the game: Allow people to feel like the world is alive around them."

But there are other tricks up Zynga Dallas's sleeve to make the world of CastleVille feel alive, and again, it's the little things. Take quests, for instance: They no longer appear as simply icons on your screen, but the characters within the game world will provide you with your next goals. As quests progress the story in most recent Zynga games, they serve the same purpose in CastleVille. However, players choose where the story goes next by venturing into The Gloom, or the darkened area around their kingdoms.

Expansion in CastleVille--done by building up your castle and gaining the necessary Castle Points--is directly tied with the storyline in the game. This makes it more meaningful than simply purchasing land. That's because the characters that will provide you with your next quests are lost in The Gloom, though you can clearly see their silhouettes. It's your choice which characters you rescue first, and once you expand to that area, that character will have a host of new quests for you. (Of course, there are other goodies to find in The Gloom, too.) It's this feature alone that leads Jackson to think he's onto something.

"The story unfolds by my path, and which way I choose to explore the world will decide what I learn about the world and how the story actually works," Jackson tells us. "So, this is really much more common to a massively multiplayer role-playing game than it has been to the 'Ville series to date. I think what we're seeing with the evolution of the 'Ville series is really the first sign of what a massively multiplayer role-playing game for the masses might look like."

George the MinerWell, with this much of a focus on story and exploration tied to such high production values, maybe Zynga Dallas is onto something. If anything, CastleVille is telling of what future Facebook games might look like. That's especially thanks to, again, the little things, like seamless sharing. Because of what sounds like extended Facebook permissions allowed on the players' end, sharing general accomplishments and requests will no longer summon the hateful News Feed pop-up.

Other small tweaks to the tried and true 'Ville formula round out what looks to be not a revolutionary, but an evolutionary Facebook game. Reputation, or Hearts gained by visiting and helping friends, is no longer just a level, but a secondary currency. (Think Social Points in The Sims Social.) With it, players can buy new decorations and items, motivating players to help one another even more. And a collaborative item crafting system will have players playing together--asynchronously, of course--more than ever.

CastleVille ultimately doesn't do much to revolutionize the 'Ville or the social games genre, but it's the little steps it takes that could move the genre forward. Like, say, a soundtrack performed by a full choir and 75-piece orchestra. But really, that's just fluff compared to what Zynga Dallas is trying to accomplish at heart: To bring a Facebook game to life not just through fancy visuals, but the spirit of exploration all too common in traditional online games. Zynga tells us that CastleVille will launch in the coming weeks in a whopping 17 languages.

FarmVille Play CastleVille for 5 free Instant Grow

And the cross-promotional train keeps rolling. First, users were offered free 20 Zoning Permits in CityVille, and now, Zynga's gamers are being offered five free applications of Instant Grow in FarmVille if they're willing to spend enough time with the company's newest game - CastleVille - to reach Level 5.

You'll receive this promo via a pop-up like the one at right, giving you a link to head directly into CastleVille. Even if you were one of the game's earliest adopters, and have long passed Level 5 in the game, this window will still appear, and it looks like you'll need to click on the game to trigger the rewards into your Gift Box. For my game, as an example, my Gift Box only received the five free Instant Grow after I went into CastleVille and then reloaded my farm in FarmVille.

These Instant Grows look to only apply to growing crops, rather than trees or animals, but they'll still come in mighty handy if you're trying to catch up on goals - specifically those Bonus Challenges in Lighthouse Cove that may require two or three days of growing the same crop due to being limited on the amount of plots you can have in your game. Regardless of how you use these freebies, remember that once you get to Level 5 in CastleVille, you'll unlikely unlock rewards that we've yet to see across the rest of Zynga's catalog of games.

Five Easy Ways to Get Ahead - CastleVille Cheats and Tips

The next major 'Ville in Zynga's flagship franchise is finally here: CastleVille. The game launched just a day ago (as of this writing) and already players are knee-deep into building their kingdoms granted by the Duke. Sure, there are quests to follow that will guide players along in their quest for the ultimate kingdom, but there are more ... subtle ways to ensure your rise to greatness is a smooth one. Here are five easy ways to get ahead in CastleVille:

Location, Location, Location
The first time you expand the boundaries of your kingdom in CastleVille is a scripted experience designed to show you how the process works, and what it takes to expand even further. What the game doesn't tell you, however, is that there's a smart way to expand your kingdom. Each plot of land surrounding you has a different amount of Castle Level needed to expand into.

At first, you might be enticed to expand into that piece of property that requires a mere 20 Castle Level to expand into, but stop right there. The key to expanding your kingdom quickly is to save those Coins and Exploration Crystals for when you have enough Castle Points to expand where it counts. The quick rule of thumb is to expand in the general direction of grayed-out characters waiting to be saved.

CastleVille Expansion
This is because the sooner you come in contact with new characters, the sooner you'll have new quests to complete. Take the image above, for instance. Expanding into that Wishing Well requires a hefty 80 Castle Points, but if you focus on expanding there first, you'll both unlock a new item for use in your kingdom and be one step closer to Alistair, a major character with quests for you.

Water Makes the Flowers Grow
Of course farming is a feature in CastleVille--it wouldn't be a 'Ville game without it. However, farming in this game serves multiple purposes, and it benefits from, again, smart positioning. When a crop is near a body of water such as a lake, river or even a well, the time it takes for that crop to ripen is reduced. As you can see the image above, I've planted crops all around my first lake, which as a result will score me more coins and other resources even faster.

Can't Chop Wood Without Trees
You'll soon come to find that smart positioning will be your greatest asset in CastleVille, and the same applies for gathering the game's three primary resources: Wood, Stones and Ore. Once you're able to place the Lumber Mill and Mining Camp, it's best to place them near trees and stones on your property, respectively. Just like crops placed near water, these buildings will produce their respective resources more quickly when near the source.

Everything Can Be Made Better Through Design
That adage doesn't ring more true in any Zynga game than CastleVille. This is because you can quite literally move everything in your kingdom. Don't like there those rocks are? Move 'em. Want to move that lake closer to your crops? Done. How about moving all of the trees in your kingdom to surround your Lumber Mills for a massive bonus? Now we're talking. Use the handy "Move" tool to your advantage--it could turn your kingdom into a resource power house.

CastleVille items

Save-A-Lot
No, it's just not a discount supermarket. As goes with most Zynga games, saving the items you find can go a long way. When you receive items like Carrots from harvests and Water Pales from fishing, don't immediately turn them into new items through crafting. It's best to wait until you have a relevant quest, as spending those items early on combined items you don't necessarily need at the moment will simply end up wasting your time.

First 10 Quests Guide - CastleVille Cheats and Tips

As we told you earlier today, CastleVille is now live on Facebook, but before you head straight into Zynga's newest Facebook game in this medieval land of castles, make sure to check out our getting started guide below, bringing you a preview of the first 10 Quests you'll encounter in the game. Through it, you'll be able to learn the in's and out's of CastleVille's basic gameplay mechanics, and will be ready to venture off into the Gloom by yourself!

CastleVille starts with you being allowed to customize your avatar (choosing gender, facial / hair features, clothing and color) and then introduces you to Duke, your computer-controlled neighbor, and Yvette, your kingdom's first citizen. They're being attacked by Gloom Rats, a kind of Beastie that has become a drain on the land. Duke rules the kingdom next to yours, and he offers you this spot of land to create your own kingdom. First things first, Yvette wants to actually place some roots in your town, so you'll need to give her a place to live. And so begins your first quest in CastleVille.

Raise the Roof

Find a good location and place Yvette's House

Gather materials to build the house

Build Yvette's house to add her to your kingdom

Yvette's House (well, the base of it anyway) is found in your inventory, the small rucksack in the bottom right corner of the gameplay screen. For this quest, the game will automatically highlight the item in your inventory, but all other buildings will be found manually in the "Buildings" tab of your inventory proper.

Once you've placed the base, you'll need to collect five each of Stones and Wood Logs to build it. Stones come from mining the various rocks or rock piles that sit on your land, while Wood Logs come from chopping trees. Note that there is no requirement to ask your friends for anything here; the 10 items can be gathered by yourself. Gather those 10 items and you'll complete Yvette's House, thus completing this quest and opening up the ability to claim coins in taxes every so often from the home. You'll also receive 500 gold (coins) and 4 experience points for finishing the quest.

Sticks and Stones

Gather 5 Wood Logs by chopping Trees

Gather 5 Stones by mining Rocks

As soon as you receive the quest above, to build Yvette's house, Duke will come around with a quest of his own, which is a redundant one, asking you to collect the same building materials for Yvette's house as you were already planning to. To be specific, you'll complete both this quest and Yvette's home with the same 10 materials, so this just serves as a bonus opportunity for experience points. You'll receive 250 gold and 3 experience points for finishing this quest.

Tax Yvette's House for coins

As soon as you finish building Yvette's home, it will instantly be ready to be taxed - how convenient! Click on it to receive some coins in tax, and to finish this quest, giving you 250 coins and 3 XP. You can tax Yvette's House once every 30 minutes from there on in.

Get Plucky
Buy 4 Chickens
Feed 4 Chickens

This quest must be activated manually by clicking on Yvette. Chickens are available in the game's market (the cornucopia symbol in the bottom right corner of the gameplay screen), under the Nature tab (the evergreen tree). Each chicken costs 250 coins, and they're relatively free roaming, once you place them on your land. A yellow arrow will appear above an animal's head when they're ready to be fed (think of the system in Pioneer Trail), and you can simply click on these four chickens immediately after you've purchased them to feed them. You'll earn 500 coins and 4 XP for finishing this quest.

Visit your new neighbor the Duke

Banish the invading Beastie

Earn 5 Reputation by helping your new neighbor

You'll be forced to Duke's kingdom as part of the in-game tutorial, and once there, will need to kill a Gloom Rat that has invaded. You'll be able to spend five friend-visit energy in your neighbors' kingdoms each time you visit to earn reputation hearts, so while you're here, go ahead and click on some animals or buildings to earn five hearts for this quest. You'll receive 500 coins and 4XP for finishing this quest. At this point, if you've followed our guide and haven't strayed, you should reach Level 3.

No Bull

Buy 2 Cows

Feed 2 Cows in your Kingdom

Spend Reputation Hearts to buy a Large Trough for your thirsty animals

Cows can be purchased from the market in the same way that you purchased the Chickens above. Each cow costs 750 coins, but so long as you haven't ventured away from the guide and spent everything, you'll have more than enough coins at this point to purchase two. Again, these animals are ready to feed instantly, so look for the yellow arrows on their heads, and click on them to feed.

For the Large Trough, you'll be introduced to the fact that Reputation Hearts don't just serve as another form of XP, but also act as a currency, allowing you to purchase some exclusive items in the store (think Social Points in the Sims Social). The Large Trough costs 5 Reputation Hearts, which you earned from visiting Duke above. You'll receive 500 coins, 4 XP and a bag of Animal Treats for finishing this quest.

A Noble Beginning

Place 5 Rubble Walls to enhance your Castle

Get your Castle to Level 10 so you can explore

As you build your castle, you'll need to venture out into the Gloom, or the dark gray areas that surround your kingdom. Exploring the gloom is the same thing as "land expansions" here, but you'll need to level up your castle itself (not your in-game character) to be able to explore further and further out into the Gloom. As the Gloom is inhabited by all sorts of nasty Beasties, you'll need more and more defenses in your kingdom to allow for further exploration. While your kingdom starts at a level of 6, purchasing those 5 Rubble Walls from the store (each costs 200 coins, and is found under the "Decor" section) will get you up to level 11. You'll receive 250 coins and 3 XP for finishing this quest.

Rescue Rafael from the Gloom

You will have already been shown Rafael's location on the map, as you can see his silhouette on the right side of your Kingdom. To explore that section of the Gloom, or expand your land, you'll need to simply click on this square to see a pop-up showing you the requirements to do so. You'll need the aforementioned Level 10 castle, along with two Crystals and 1000 coins, which you already have on hand. You'll receive 250 coins, 3 XP and another Crystal for completing this quest. You'll also receive that new chunk of land to expand your kingdom into automatically. Rafael will also become a potential citizen in your kingdom.

From Gloom to Bloom
Place 5 Flowers
Feed 3 Animals
Clear 2 Rocks

This quest is pretty straightforward, and will likely be representative of further quests we'll receive in the game. Flowers can be purchased from the game's store (Passion Flowers, for instance, cost 200 coins each), while, again, you'll just need to wait for the yellow arrows to appear above animals' heads to know that they're ready to be fed.

Chickens are ready to be fed once every nine minutes, for the sake of argument, or you could also purchase new animals from the store for instant progress (but more expense). For the rock requirement, some rocks take eight energy to remove, while others require just four. Keep that in mind if you're looking to save energy. you'll earn 500 coins and 4 XP for finishing off this quest.

Place the house foundation for your new subject

Build Rafael's House to add him to your kingdom

Tax Rafael's House

As we said above, once you venture out into the Gloom for the first time, you'll come back with a new character - Rafael, the Romancer - who needs a place to live. You've been given his home, just as you were given Yvette's, and can place the base where you'd like. You'll need eight each of Stones and Wood Logs to finish his home, so just go mine some rocks and chop into enough trees to be able to finish its construction. After you've completed Rafael's Home, you'll be able to immediately collect its taxes, thus finishing this 10th quest in the game, and giving you 500 coins and 4 XP. For the record, you can collect further taxes from Rafael's House every 30 minutes.

And there you have it! A complete guide to what to expect from the first 10 quests, and the first three levels of Zynga's new Facebook game CastleVille. From this point, you'll be introduced to even more characters - like Alistair, a powerful wizard - and more Beasties like wild wolves. You'll be able to continue to build up your castle in size and defenses, and visit your friends to share in on the fun. Make sure to keep checking back with us as we bright you continued coverage surrounding Zynga's new game, but for now, why not try out CastleVille for yourself?

Getting to Know the CastleVille Characters

Just like any good old fantasy game, CastleVille will have plenty of NPCs (non-player characters). They are characters in the game that are managed from the pc, but interact with you and often are really essential in advancing the storyline with the sport. Due to the fact CastleVille may have a robust story, the characters you interact with will be a large portion of one's success.

We haven't learned about all of the different characters you'll see inside the game, but here are some tidbits we've learned from studying interviews using the video game builders and viewing a few of the CastleVille videos offered on YouTube and other sites. Here's a quick look at a few of the different charactes you'll meet up with in the game.

Tom the Knight
Tom is definitely an getting older knight with a thick Scottish accent. Investors Give 'Farmville' Maker a Cold Shoulder

As its workers celebrated with hot chocolate and cinnamon buns, Zynga saw its stock dinged on its first day of trading Friday — an unexpected turn of events for a closely watched public debut seen as a precursor to Facebook's next year. Zynga Inc., the online game developer behind "FarmVille," ''Mafia Wars" and other popular time killers on Facebook, raised at least $1 billion in its initial public offering of stock, the largest for a U.S. Internet company since Google's $1.4 billion IPO in 2004.

But by Friday afternoon, Zynga's stock fell 50 cents, or 5 percent, to close at $9.50. The stock priced at $10 on Thursday, at the high end of its expected range. It traded as high as $11.50 on Friday before heading into a downward spiral on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It was far from the eye-popping jump that has been the trend this year for freshly public Internet darlings such as LinkedIn Corp.

Zynga's opening — with a ticker symbol of "ZNGA" — was supposed to be big. After all, unlike many others with IPOs, the company is profitable, with more than 220 million people playing its games on Facebook each month. What this all means for Facebook's IPO, expected sometime after April, is hard to say. One thing is clear, though.

"A hot IPO is not guaranteed," said Kathleen Smith, principal of IPO investment advisory firm Renaissance Capital.

Despite the big-name public offerings this year, the IPO market is not in good health. Buyers are skittish and concerned about the high volatility of freshly public stocks, Smith said. Big name or not, investors don't want to pay sky-high prices for stocks, especially not before a company has proven itself with good earnings reports and analyst ratings.

Seventy percent of the 125 companies that went public this year are now trading below their IPO price, according to Renaissance Capital. While Friday's drop doesn't look good, it's not devastating for Zynga. Its CEO, Mark Pincus, said the company's focus is on "delivering great products" that expand audience for social games over the next few years — and not on the next trading day.

"We didn't have any expectations coming into this whole process," he said in an interview. "We decided to go public a long time ago."

Pincus rang the Nasdaq's opening bell in San Francisco, a first in the city for a freshly public company. The company's roughly 1,700 San Francisco employees woke up at the crack of down to celebrate with cinnamon buns and hot cocoa. Zynga also delivered video of the opening ceremony over the Internet to its offices around the world.

Thursday's pricing gives Zynga a market value of about $7 billion. That's roughly half of the value of online deals site Groupon, which began trading in early November. Zynga, though, sold a much bigger chunk of its available shares, 14.3 percent compared with Groupon's 5.5 percent. It's an issue of supply and demand — selling more shares means investors don't have to scramble to get their hands on them.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said stocks trade based on supply and demand on the first day.

In Zynga's case, he believes the IPO's underwriters placed more shares with investors who were going to "flip" the stock — that is, buy a hot stock and quickly sell it to make a profit instead of holding on to it for the long run. All that selling tempered the stock's price, and other nervous investors started selling, too.

Sterne Agee's Arvind Bhatia said the issue came down to valuation — what people are willing to pay.

"You might like a company but not its valuation," said Bhatia, who took the unusual step of starting coverage of Zynga's stock before it went public, giving it an "Underperform" rating and a price target of $7.

With its huge player base and a few loyal spenders, Zynga had net income of $90.6 million in 2010, an unusual pre-IPO money-maker in the sector.

Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz, however, initiated coverage Friday with a "Neutral" rating on the stock. Although Zynga is the leader in Facebook gaming, he's concerned that it won't be able to grow fast enough to justify its stock price. Growth in Facebook gaming has slowed, and Zynga's market share has declined from 50 percent to 38 percent of daily active users, he wrote.

He's also concerned that Zynga's famously aggressive and hard-charging culture may not be the best field to grow good games in. Others have raised concerns that the focus on deadlines and profits might be squeezing out creativity and talent.

In November, Groupon raised $700 million in its IPO. The granddaddy of all Internet IPOs might happen next year, as Facebook Inc. is expected to raise as much as $10 billion.

Bhatia declined to speculate about what Zynga's first-day drop might mean for Facebook. But he pointed out that what was a bad year for Zynga was a good year for Facebook. That's because Facebook stated charging application developers a 30 percent cut of the money they make through its site. That means for every dollar a player spends on "FarmVille" crops, 30 cents goes to Facebook.

"They are in the driver's seat," Bhatia said of Facebook. The company, he added, is "in class of its own."

Zynga Builds Its CastleVille Walls, As Its Facebook Traffic Flattens And Falls

New Facebook game CastleVille is one of Zynga’s fastest-growing titles ever, as it announced a few days ago. That’s good news for the company, but maybe not good enough when you consider the trajectory of most of its other games on Facebook — and its plans for an initial public offering as soon as this coming week.

After launching in the middle of November, the medieval role-playing simulation title has grown to 6.9 million daily active users today, currently the third-highest out of any Zynga game on Facebook.

Overall, the developer has a total of 49.5 million daily actives on Facebook, according to Inside Network’s AppData application tracking service. It’s still by far the largest of any Facebook developer, but it has been falling from its peaks in previous months and years. Up until CastleVille launched, its games had been drifting down over the last 30 days from 48.2 million DAU.

And bigger picture, the company’s Facebook DAU had been 59 million in the second quarter, and had already fallen to 54 million in the third. In previous amendments to its filing, Zynga had said these changes were due “to a decline in players of our more mature games and a limited number of new game launches in the first nine months of 2011.”

DAU is crucial because it indicates how addicted players are. This daily addiction is what leads some fraction of the players to buy virtual goods — the model that drives the social gaming business. So, CastleVille has a lot of growing left to do if it’s going to bring back or replace all these former users. It’s certainly off to a good start.

But by picking through the other 30-day AppData sets for Zynga’s other largest Facebook titles, you can see that most of its other games are declining. Zynga has had exceptional success at keeping its games popular with users over the months and years, but it is not immune from natural churn, nor from unsuccessful launches.

CastleVille isn’t Zynga’s only success story now. The developer has been making big gains on mobile in the past year, culminating with an increase of more than a million DAU in October for an average total of 11.1 million DAU across iOS, Android and mobile web apps, as Inside Mobile Apps spotted in the filings. That success has been led by Words With Friends, which has continued to grow this month.

CastleVille appears to be getting at least some resources that had been supporting other recent launches. Zynga has traditionally grown traffic through clever combinations of tactics including many smaller iterations within games, large-scale advertising on Facebook, aggressive use of Facebook’s social channels, and launches of new games and expansions that it can direct players to when they get tired of older games.

Regarding Mafia Wars and Adventure World’s especially distinct falls, Zynga has cut off recent launches before — like for Poker Blitz, which you’ve probably never heard of.

There’s also a more specific issue that Zynga faces with cross-promotion, that has mattered more and more as its players — mostly people who don’t consider themselves “gamers” — get more sophisticated. As my former colleague AJ Glasser observes in a great analysis piece over on Inside Social Games, when people playing one game eventually get bored, they might not find a suitable replacement in Zynga’s stable.

The company’s stakes are higher than ever, with ongoing rumors of its initial public offering pegging the date for as early as this coming week. Investors want a growth story. Zynga does have that in terms of revenue, as its recent filings show. It has been figuring out how to steadily make more money per user over the years.

But it also needs to show that it can keep gaining new users without losing too many old ones. CastleVille will need to show a strong growth streak over the next few months if it’s going to head into CityVille territory, and address its larger traffic concerns.

Zynga’s CastleVille Crosses 5M Daily Active Users, Now Growing Faster Than CityVille

Zynga’s newest Facebook game, CastleVille, has crossed five million daily active users. To put this in perspective, the social gaming giant’s fastest growing (and most popular) game CityVille, only reached 3.2 million daily active users six days after its launch.

The newest title from the social gaming giant allows players to build mini-empires from castles, craft art and armour and trade, and defend your kingdom in a medieval world. The game was created by the Zynga Dallas team, which was part of the social gaming giant’s acquisition of Bonfire Studios.

With this new game, Zynga took key elements of each ‘Ville’ title and brought the best into CastleVille. CastleVille combines with elements of self-expression from FarmVille, the ability to build the fantasy city of your dreams with CityVille, and the rich narrative and storytelling features from FrontierVille.

The game is also experimenting with new ways of being social, and self-expression. The basis of the game is around building the castle of your dreams and transforming the unexplored land into your very own kingdom. Along the way, you’ll encounter a number of characters, who are all involved in the storyline of the game; and can complete quests.

For background, FrontierVille has 2.6 million daily active users six days after launch. Currently CityVille and FarmVille are seeing 11 million and 7 million daily active users, respectively according to AppData. And 68 percent of CastleVille players are already playing at least twice a day. So far, 135,176,035 quests have been completed, there have been 4,594,750 expansions into the Gloom; 23,845,983 beasties have been banished from the kingdom, 182,360 Bubbly Grogs have been crafted and 8,262,768 baby cows were raised.

Other recently launched games Adventure World and Empires & Allies don’t seem to have grown quite as fast as CastleVille. And CastleVille’s early success could be good news for the gaming company’s top line. Hits are a big revenue-maker for Zynga, who reported that profits were down in Q2 of this year because of the lack of any new game launches in the first half of 2011. In the third quarter, Zynga’s revenue was up by 80 percent but net income dropped.

Of course, it should be interesting to see if CastleVille can sustain the same growth that CityVille did over the next few months. Stay tuned.

Zynga’s Newest Title CastleVille Combines Rich Storylines, Fantasy, And Social Gaming In A Medieval World

As Zynga announced at an event a few weeks ago, the newest title in the “Ville” franchise, which includes FarmVille, FrontierVille, and CityVille, is CastleVille. The newest title from the social gaming giant allows players to build mini-empires from castles, craft art and armour and trade, and defend your kingdom in a medieval world. The game was created by the Zynga Dallas team, which was part of the social gaming giant’s acquisition of Bonfire Studios.

Zynga Dallas director Bill Jackson explains that the studio took key elements of each ‘Ville’ title and brought the best into CastleVille. He explains that CastleVille combines with elements of self-expression from FarmVille, the ability to build the fantasy city of your dreams with CityVille, and the rich narrative and storytelling features from FrontierVille. The game is also experimenting with new ways of being social, and self-expression.

When first beginning the game, you’ll need to choose your character and build your look. Jackson says this is the most expansive character building features to date, with dozens of looks to choose from. Once immersed in CastleVille’s medieval world, peasants, princesses, pirates (and players) will choose their own path in the game by meeting new and different characters, completing quests and exploring mysterious areas.

The basis of the game is around building the castle of your dreams and transforming the unexplored land into your very own kingdom. Along the way, you’ll encounter a number of characters, who are all involved in the storyline of the game. You’ll first see Duke, who will help you build your castle and is from a neighboring kingdom. There’s Yvette (the beautiful songstress), Giselle (the lovely maiden) George (the friendly village Viking), Sonja (a sexy pirate), Rafael (a playboy woodsman) and Tom (the rough dragon slayer).

As Jackson says, this game has the most intensive storyline, which is why there are so many characters. Zynga also wants you to feel like you are immersed fully in the world, bringing in elements of fantasy and adventure. “You have to do work yourself and be part of the adventure to success at the game,” he explains. You choose your own path to discover mysterious locations, find rare items and reveal hidden characters within the game.

In terms of social interactions, you can visit your friends’ kingdoms and gift them art, armor and potions to help complete quests and challenge the forces of the Gloom. There is also a reputation system that gives you more points by how social you are in the game. Basically, the more social you are, the more reputation points you earn, and the faster you progress in the game. Obviously, this gives you more of an incentive to interact with friends and buy virtual goods. Jackson says this streamlined social experience makes it easier and more fun to play the game with friends.

CastleVille will be available to play for free in the next few weeks in 17 languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Turkish, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Japanese and Thai).

Zynga has been churning out games over the past week months. The company launched Mafia Wars 2, Adventure World, The Pioneer Trail, Empires & Allies, and Hanging with Friends.

We know that developing new hits is a big part of Zynga’s business model and that profits were down in Q2 of this year because of the lack of any new game launches in the first half of 2011. We haven’t seen Q3 numbers yet, so it’s hard to tell whether these new launches are actually making a meaningful difference in Zynga’s top line.

According to Inside Network’s AppData leaderboard, Empires & Allies seems to be doing the best out of all the new titles with 19.8 million monthly active users. This is followed by Mafia Wars 2, with 13.7 million users. Of course, CityVille and FarmVille are the top games for Zynga, with 54.2 million and 28.2 million monthly active users, respectively. Perhaps the next Ville to top the list will be CastleVille.

CastleVille a fun mixture of fantasy adventure and social gaming

Zynga's new game CastleVille allows Facebook users to become the protagonists in their own fantasy adventures. CastleVille is kind of like The Sims Social in a medieval setting. There are also elements of strategy and role-playing games mixed in for added fun. According to Brian Ward of , CastleVille is the fastest growing application on Facebook. It has more daily users than the Washington Post Social Reader, YouTube, the music service.

After playing long enough to get hooked on it, it is pretty easy to see why the game has developed a strong and loyal following since its official release on November 14. According to Joe Osborne of , "Zynga's CastleVille has surpassed the likes of FarmVille, The Sims Social and Zynga Poker to become the second most played game daily on Facebook with 8.1 million returning every day. The game is now in the top five for monthly players, with 27.6 million, according to . And it did it in just 22 days."

After the character creation stage, players are given the tasks of building a castle in their new kingdoms and expanding into territory that has been taken over by an evil sorcerer. These long-term goals will gradually be achieved through both quests and routine chores such as harvesting crops and working on a castle wall. Players are also encouraged to create buildings such as the workshop or the kitchen that allow them to do more things in the game.

Fans of will appreciate the wide range of day-to-day tasks players can do while waiting for crops to grow or working on quests. Players can earn extra experience points and items by doing things such as tending flowers, feeding farm animals or fishing from the local pond. Getting curious and clicking on random objects often reveals more things a player can do to kill time, such as clearing out stumps or mining for rocks and minerals.

They will also appreciate the ways that people can interact with friends. CastleVille players can ask friends for items they need or send them a variety of gifts. They can also visit friends' kingdoms and do chores in return for small rewards or completing quest goals. When players are first starting out, it is helpful to visit the kingdom ruled by a friendly non-player character known as The Duke and find things to do in exchange for money and other small bonuses.

Fortunately for people who enjoy action-oriented games, CastleVille incorporates other things in addition to feeding chickens or making hemp rope. From time to time, players will attract the attention of evil beasts and have to defend their kingdoms. Players will eventually be able to explore locked areas on the map that reveal more quests and potentially fun things such as a wishing well and a friendly wizard's house.

CastleVille is free, but Zynga gives players the option of spending real money on things they need such as crowns (which are used to buy items or skip steps in quests) and exploration crystals that allow players to unlock new squares on the map. The temptation can be strong because it takes a lot of time and work to earn some of the more useful items by killing wolves or doing chores.

Being forced to progress more slowly in the game if a player doesn't want to put some crowns on a credit card can be frustrating, but it isn't all bad. Most of the time, doing routine chores is a fun and immersive experience. It is easy to spend hours on things like growing wheat or collecting ingredients for grape juice.

However, sometimes feeding cute cows gets a little old and it would be more fun to take some shortcuts. It is hard to say for certain if the creators at Zynga should be praised for making a game that people are going to want to devote a lot of time and resources to, or if they should be condemned as evil geniuses for making it seem halfway reasonable to spend hard-earned dollars to unlock things or buy more.

Facebook users in the Spokane area should definitely check out CastleVille. It has some of the same appeal as The Sims Social, but with fewer prompts to invite other people to play or share things on the user's Wall. And unlike other social games such as or Empires & Allies, where a player might reach a point where he can't advance beyond a fairly early stage without getting more friends to join him, it works extremely well as a one-player game.

In CastleVille, playing with friends is simply another way to have fun. As it should be. That is a refreshing change from The Sims Social, where a player needs just to finish some of the quests.
