You must plow, plant and harvest crops, tend your animals and build up money doing so.
Players gift each other trees, plants, animals and decorative items for each others' farms--which is why having neighbors is so coveted. Each of these items give you more coins when you harvest them, and in turn, you can buy more items to give your farm its own unique look.

If you've exhausted your own friends list, you may be tempted to find a "neighbor hack for FarmVille" to add more friends. Don't do this! I'm going to tell you a helpful way to find more neighbors : Go to Zynga's (creator of FarmVille) FarmVille forum and register. Look for a thread that says "Finding Neighbors." By using this thread, you can legally add hundreds of fellow farmers. Of course, be careful doing this. Most of these people are legitimate players, but if you start getting a lot of weird messages, don't be afraid to take them off your friends list.
Add Unknown FarmVille Neighbors While Protecting Your Privacy Get More FarmVille Neighbors--No Worries!
You can sign up in a number of forums to add new neighbors to your FarmVille neighbor list. This is great, more neighbors mean a bigger, fancier farm--but in doing this, you are exposing your Facebook account to people you don't know. Here's the solution to ramp up your FV neighbor list and protect your privacy at the same time.
1. Open up Facebook to the home page. On the left side of the page under the section where it says News Feed, Status Update, etc. click on the link that says "more."
2. When the link opens, look at the bottom of this section where it says "Create New List." Click on it.
3. Title your new list "FarmVille Neighbors", "FarmVille Friends" or whatever you would like to call your list.
4. After you've created your list, look on the top right hand section of the home page where you'll see "Settings." Click on it, then click on the drop down box where it says, "Privacy Settings."
5. When the Privacy page opens, select, "Profile."
6. When the window opens, you will see boxes such as " Basic Info", "Personal Info", etc. Click the drop down box in each category and select "Customize."
7. A new box will pop up asking "Who Can See This?" At the bottom of the box, you will see the option "Except These People." Type in the name of your friend's list, and select it.
8. Repeat for every option except wall posts. You want your FV neighbors to be able to see your wall posts, so they can see your ribbons, share the wealth, etc.
9. When you are finished this, click the tab that says "Contact Information." Repeat the above steps for all the options on the contact information box.
10. Ok, you're almost done! Now, whenever you add a new neighbor, add them to the list before you confirm them as a friend.
Now you can add unknown neighbors to ramp up your XP points without sweating about losing your privacy!
